A picture book inspired by the Long Friday—a real event in Iceland that inspired women around the world to stand up, walk out, and march together for women’s rights. I DARE! I CAN! I WILL!, a story that inspires children to believe in their dreams, advocate for themselves, and pursue their passions.
MY THOUGHTS: Firstly, I am not a proponent of mass protests and especially when they have children in attendance at the protests. I do not think it wise or safe to involve children in these events.
In this children's book, I Dare! I Can! I Will!, an historic event in the struggle for women's rights is recounted about Icelandic women who in 1975 let it be known that they were important by leaving their positions at home and work and protested by a "walk out" showing how much they contributed to the world by their work. Long undervalued and underappreciated, women were crying for a change to be valued for their abilities.
It is sad that even today women are not valued and recognized for their contributions to life in this world. And in some parts of the world women and girls are still simply property and totally without rights and privileges.
This informative children's book will aid in teaching the need for action and work done for women's rights.
ABOUT THE BOOK: Vera and Mamma are headed out for a march. Still, it’s not just any march: It’s October 24 in Reykjavík, and on this day in 1975, the women of Iceland took the day off, walked out of their homes and away from their jobs—as farmworkers, butchers, and fisherwomen; wives, daughters, and children—and marched to demand equality and change, chanting: “I dare! I can! I will!” And they did, inspiring and empowering girls and women to make a change, not just in their country but all around the world.
With each obstacle she faces, she repeats the mantra I DARE! I CAN! I WILL! reminding herself of her bravery and capabilities. Through vibrant illustrations and a powerful narrative, Olafsdottir encourages young readers to believe in their abilities and never give up on their dreams.
I DARE! I CAN! I WILL! is an excellent resource for parents, teachers, and caregivers to inspire and motivate young readers.
