My thoughts: The lyrics of the 165 year old poem sung as a hymn through the years teaches that God makes all things beautiful. The years have not dimmed the beauty and tradition of this great song because it reaches young and old, educated and uneducated, strong and weak. It is a treasure to be taught and learned.

ReplyDeleteI have never sung the song. I've read the James Herriott books though! *grin* The sky today is not something bright and beautiful. Its grey. well, maybe beautiful, but not bright.

The book 'The Progeny' looks interesting. (Its more than $10)
ReplyDeleteFor a little kids' book, I think the illustrations are very important for catching and holding interest in a book. Although it is possible to hold a child's attention with just words and it is important to foster a child's imagination, bright colors and recognizable images help a child to focus on the book. Additionally, many adults will use the illustrations to engage the child. I know I have asked my nieces and nephews if they see the dog, cat, whatever and then tie that back to their own pet, or family member or something they saw on our hike, or ....

ReplyDeleteI have sung this hymn, and it is one of my most favorites. I think the brightest and most beautiful idea in the Bible is the revelation of Christ's love, which is so light-giving that it can shine on the darkest of circumstances. One of my favorite verses is Roman's 8:38-39 which proclaim that nothing can separate us from His love. There are a lot of ideas that give hope, but to me this is the greatest.

ReplyDeleteBesides All Things Bright and Beautiful, which I love, the only other hymn I recognized was Once in Royal David's City. That is quite possibly my favorite Christmas song of all time but I had no idea those hymns shared an author. I will definitely listen to some of the others as well, because odds are I will like some of them since these are two of my most favorites.

In a picture book, 75% of the credit is due to the illustrations. In a novel with illustrations, perhaps 25% of the credit is due to the illustrator. Illustrations in the Little House books written by Laura Ingalls Wilder are very memorable.

I have never sung the hymn "All Things Bright and Beautiful". I do find all living things like children, plants and animals bright and beautiful.

ReplyDeleteIllustrators are key in children's books because even when the book isn't being read, little eyes love to linger over colorful pictures. I think the Little House on the Prairie books were beautifully illustrated and brought the story to life for us.

The illustrator is so important for a children's book. Children learn and remember more by seeing lovely pictures. I love the illustrations from "Alice in Wonderland"
