Smile! Here comes one of the most memorable (and share-able) selfies of a generation.
“There I am! My first selfie!”
After the star of this story gets her brother’s hand-me-down camera-phone and a quick lesson in the “selfie,” there is no stopping her! Anything can be turned into a selfie, and a host of adventures and misadventures caught on camera prove her point. Turning the camera-phone on herself becomes a part of her every day, all day long. Until, that is, it’s time to call it a day. Turns out, camera-phones and kids alike need to recharge their batteries!

These kids today. Those aren't pictures. They're just noise!
ReplyDeleteAn illustrator can't improve the author's prose but they can help make the book more memorable. My favorite are the delightfully surreal illustrations by John Tenniel of the Lewis Carroll books.
ReplyDeleteI have taken many selfies of myself and volunteer to take some for others. But I never get carried away and cannot for the life of me understand the selfie-stick trend. I've always been more shy of the cameras and opt-out of photos quite often, not everyone will understand that I don't need 100 different pictures to validate myself.
ReplyDeleteA well illustrated book can help readers visualize what is happening and tell a different compelling story all on its own. I was a superfan of Captain Underpants as a kid and if it weren't for the illustrations, I wouldn't have been so huge on the series.
ReplyDeleteI have never taken a selfie but I know the kids love to do it. I do not know why people enjoy taking selfies.

I have taken one selfie of myself and deleted. I don't understand the craze over it myself.
ReplyDeleteI've taken a selfie of myself a time or two, but not of myself and others, and not to post all over social media. I think it's fine as long as people don't go overboard with it. Have fun with it, but don't go crazy.
ReplyDeleteI think the illustrator plays a large part in the success of a book if there's a lot of illustrations. People want something that visually appeals to them. If it doesn't catch their eye then it'll be harder to sell.
ReplyDeleteDr. Seuss stands out because he had a bunch of wacky animal characters and plenty of different colors in his drawings.
I think a lot of people go overboard with selfies! I will take an occasional selfie with my family...when we're traveling or out doing something fun!
ReplyDeleteIllustrations in childrens books are so important...it's the best way to keep the child interested and learning! I loved the illustrations in the old Clifford the Big Red Dog and Curious George books!

In college I was always taking selfies-- it was kind of the new, cool thing to do. Now those pictures embarrass me and I roll my eyes when I see people posting a bunch of selfies online. I do take one every now and then with my son, and I love those :)
ReplyDeleteAfter many times and even being shown by my daughter who is a pro at it, I just can't take a nice selfie :)
