We all know that “Old MacDonald Had A Farm” and we’ve read
the story and sung the song. Well, maybe some even “bought the T-shirt”! But
who knows HOW Old MacDonald really got the farm in the first place?
Judy Sierra is going to share her “take” on how today’s Old
MacDonald might get his farm and she does it taking in the whole sustainability
(or green) issue along with it. But you don’t feel as though a bunch of tree
huggers wrote the book. It is cute. It is fun. It is innovative!
Illustrated with absurdly cute and colorful pictures by Matthew
Myers, the story really comes alive and captures the reader’s (and definitely the listener’s)
attention.
First of all we get a glimpse of where MacDonald lives- the
suburbs complete with large yards covered with grass that needs mowing.
Despairing of this mundane and boring chore, he has a visitor – The Little Red
Hen – who rescues him with a brilliant idea.
“Not your average bird was she,
but the smartest hen in history."
“Join me in a garden caper--On and on it goes in catchy rhyme (caught your little one’s attention, too) until in the end……. Well, you do know that “Old MacDonald Had A Farm…. E.I.E.I.O.
cover up this grass with paper,
layer cardboard, then add dirt.”
And of course, I recommend this delightful book that is fun,
teaches working together and sustainability, and does it with eye-popping and
strong but cute characters, and with rhyming text.
