Manner-Man is a superhero who is called forth by Rob to help him and his friends deal with rude, bullying, mean, grabbing children. Manner-Man (with the wonderful red "M" on his hand) is summoned when Rob (and later Rob's friends) raises three fingers in the air (they actually form an upside-down M) and reciting:
Manner-Man saves the day time after time no matter what. But as the day progresses and Manner-Man comes to the rescue, the kids are learning lessons in how to deal with different situations and people.
As Rob goes through the day, he (and we) meet more of Sherril Cannon's other book characters: Gimme-Jimmy, and Elisabeth of Magic Word fame. In the delightful Kalpart illustrations, we see Peter and the Whimper-Whineys book laying on Rob's blanket after has had fallen asleep. Covers to previous books by this author show up in Manner-Man. The illustrations by Kalpart are consistent in all of Sherril Cannon's books and bring continuity to the storytelling. I have reviewed these books by Ms. Cannon on Chat With Vera. The themes of kindness, sharing, not-bullying, not pushing, not grabbing, not whining, etc. are brought out in these three books and are reinforced in Manner-Man. If a home or school has the entire set, they will see wonderful opportunities for reinforcement of good behavior and social skills by using the books interchangeably.
The rhyming text has a nice cadence and is a delight to read aloud or to listen while it is being read. Young readers, with somewhat advanced skills, will be able to read it to themselves but it is delightful to read aloud to young children.
"I am strong, and
my flash is bright,
And I will defend you and make things all right."
And I will defend you and make things all right."
Another key aspect of managing unruly playmates is to say (or shout out), "Not nice" whenever there is a grabbing, pushing, snatching playmate.

ReplyDeleteI have one twin that is a bully. She is a bully to her sister and to other kids. She was that way in the womb! There are older kids at the preschool that she will hit and then I show up and they tell me that she hit them and I have been asking for advice for what to do but no answers. Nothing that solves the problem long term.
ReplyDeleteI find it interesting that she travels around the country in an RV, my husband has always wanted to to that. I even have to wonder if my husband my have worked on her RV at one time or another since he did that for the last 14 years in Florida, lol.

Yes I have, I even had to send one of my daughters to live with my parents in another state to get her away from the bullies for her own safety. My daughter 'had the nerve' to try to talk one of her girl friends out of going with a popular boy who was into drugs. His family was one of the prominent names in the small community so he had a lot of followers, she shoved her down the stairs at school and shoved her up against the edge of the car door when she was getting in, so we removed her from the situation.

Yes, there was a lot of that going on in my school 20 years ago; I can only imagine how much worse the bullying and teasing is now.

ReplyDeleteThank you Vera for a wonderful review of Manner Man. I have been meaning to pick up a copy and I think having the set for a school would be excellent. Thanks for linking it in to the kidLitBlogHop, cheers Julie Grasso
ReplyDeleteWe also loved this book and Sherrill is so generous taking up this wonderful cause. thanks for linking into the Kid Lit Blog Hop. Tweeting...
ReplyDeleteWe got our son when he was 8 and have been trying to teach him empathy, compassion, caring, consideration, etc. But he's now 11 and he's still deliberatly defiant, hurtful, and generally hateful. He's close to being kicked out of school, failing all but one class and as a natural consequence of his behaviors, has no real friends. We've been through behavior programs, rewards programs, counselors, psychiatrists and psychologists all with no real progress. It scares me to think our 6 month old will grow up exposed to it all on a daily basis...
ReplyDeleteYes I have.
ReplyDeleteI visited her webpage. I got an error on sometghing. I have dealt with bullying MANY times. I used to teach 2nd grade and Special Education. Thanks for this giveaway.
ReplyDeleteMy 5 and 7 year old fight all the time and won't share with each other. Luckily they share well with other people most of the time. My 5 year old could use a little bit of work in that department still though.
ReplyDeleteThank all of you for your nice comments, and I wish I could provide a copy for each of you! I hope all of you will encourage your children to help each other cope with bullies, and to learn to be considerate of one another. Please help all children to join the Manner-Man team!!
